Schoolnet provides some of the largest K–12school systems in the United States with Web-based solutions that help improve school administration, nurture educator and staff talent, and increase student achievement. Schoolnet noted the lack of a single, comprehensive social networking site for educators that would allow them to share resources, best practices, and success stories. They decided to provide one, but needed a social computing platform that was flexible, scalable, and gave users a familiar experience. SchoolNet used Microsoft® Office SharePoint® Server 2007 to build, manage, and publish schoolnet.com, a K–12 achievement Web portal focused on empowering student success. Schoolnet chose SharePoint because of its out-of-the-box social networking features like blogs and wikis and because it could be easily integrated into their current content management systems using the Microsoft .NET Framework.
- Users create profiles, engage in online community activities, and generate content that can be shared, discussed, and updated.
- Schoolnet customers use schoolnet.com to find instructional content, resources, materials, and tools from all over the Web and the education community.
- The site hosts Edupedia, a community-edited wiki resource on K–12 education.
- A streamlined user interface makes it easy for users to take advantage of all the site's rich functionality.
- Because SharePoint is extensible and flexible, Schoolnet can deploy new site features quickly and easily.
