Managed by the Joint Interoperability Test Command of the United States Department of Defense, the DoD 5015.2 Standard is a well-known industry standard that sets the bar for records management applications in the enterprise content management (ECM) industry. The standard offers guidelines for how records and permissions should be managed, the automation of periodic review of vital records, the management of e-mail as records, and the ability to support multi-phase lifecycle management for documents that require more-complex retention rules. When choosing a records management solution, many companies and other organizations in highly-regulated industries will only consider a DoD 5015.2 certified solution.

Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 with the DoD Resource Kit received certification on May 23, 2007. It is listed on the JITC product register.

The DoD 5015.2 Resource Kit is intended for customers who are required to run their records management system in a DoD 5015.2 Chapter 2 certified state.

Customers who would like to enhance the records management functionality of SharePoint 2007 with particular features available within the DoD 5015.2 Resource Kit but are not required to run their system in a certified configuration should not use the DoD 5015.2 Resource Kit. Alternatively, sample code and documentation is available for the most frequently requested features available within the DoD 5015.2 Resource Kit. These are:
