New Master Page
As part of a team effort to design a better master page for our blogs, I'm now sharing a base page design with Jason Cahill (visit his new blog here).  We will be working on our Master Pages over time--and sharing some of our learning and tips/tricks as we go.

Masterpage permissions

Hello,

can you share the steps you had to take to setup the security/access permissions for the custom masterpage?

I am using a very cumbersome workaround right now to get the masterpage into SharePoint (basically, testing in .NET then uploading it through MasterPage gallery.

Even though I am the Farm Administrator and have all permissions on the site collection, SharePoint Designer won't let me modify (let alone create) the master page (I get access denied when I follow that route to create the master page).

During runtime, I am getting ".this page cannot be loaded". When I switch back to default.master, my custom page loads without a hitch. Note that I have a usercontrol on my custom page, but like I said, everything loads fine with a default.master. With my own master page, it is a no g because page cannot be loaded, sometimes with an error message that page class associated with my custom masterpage is not "safe"; the DLL with the custom master page is signed, and in GAC.

Thank you in advance for any hint.

Re: Masterpage Permissions

Sorry to say but I used SharePoint Designer.  There is a setting that your administrator controls to allow SPD editing (a lot of admins turn it off as SPD will "unghost" your sites pages which can be an administrative nightmare during upgrades), but you can ask your admin to allow SPD editing on your site collection.
