Adding Flash Animations To SharePoint

Update: For those who have been asking for the "code" to this I have created a sample piece of flash content, uploaded it, embedded it in a page using the content editor web part, placed a copy of the embed code in a text file, exported a copy of the Content Editor web part used, and packaged all that up in a zip file. The posting on all this can be reached here. http://sharepoint.microsoft.com/blogs/mikeg/Lists/Posts/Post.aspx?ID=1012 Hope this answers peoples questions and helps

Update: Uncle Mikey messed up when I first posted and the video cut off part way through. Luckily an astute observer let me know and I have re-encoded the video and re-uploaded it.

I received a question today from a client as to how to add flash animation content to SharePoint. The process is pretty straightforward. While there is no out of the box "Flash" web part the task is easily accomplished and can involve either the use of SharePoint Designer or the Content Editor web part. To illustrate this I have created a video screen capture using Windows Media Encoder that you can watch and follow for a step by step "how to" tutorial.

another way to do it

I had the same problem, but i resolved using a page viewer webpart. IE render my swf without problems. I liked it because it's really simple and everybody can add flash if they want to.

But I didn't try with firefox or another browser...

Re: another way to do it

Great idea! I hadn't thought of doing that. I assume then you used the file setting. That is what I love with this technology, so many ways to get things done. Thanks for posting this.

Code snippet?

Mike you showed some code with which you embedded the flash .swf. Could you publish that code please?
Thanks

I guess you are a better actor then a programmer

Hey buddy, I appreciate your effrot putting this code over the net. but i really think that you should consider the time you are taking during the video for this tiny job. I mean, throughout the video you are talking rubbish most of the time and no body is telling you but seriously not even a single guy is interested in your music during the video. So if you really wanna help. Try to speed up the work in next video.... PLEASE

Re: I guess you are a better actor then a programmer

LOL! Well I dont know what to say to this except if you are looking for a programmer this is not the place for you. I have never claimed to be one and that is what I like so much about sharepoint, you dont need to be in order to do most things. I do need to post up the code, although what it is people are loking for is a bt perplexing as it is pretty sellf explanatory in the video. You use a flash application to create a flash piece, the app spits out embed code, and you embed that in the content editor web part. There is nothing to write, its copy and paste, something that even a simpleton like myself spouting rubbish can do.
If it makes you feel better I am packaging up an example right now but not not sure how much help it will be as again this is a copy and paste exercise not programming.
As for the rubbish and music. Its who I am and really am not going to change that. I enjoy my job and try to make it fun. My blog and its contents is for my customers and they seem to enjoy it and et some useful information out of it. It is also not a part of my daily job simply when I have free time so if I can help a bit with information then great but if you are looking for in-depth coding examples where people are focused on providing those then there are much better sites out there by others for whom this is a focus.

Re: Adding Flash Animations To SharePoint

Okay I have uploaded a sample, and also inlcuded a zip file containing the project files (flash video, text file with embed code, and exported Content Editor web part with code embedded) Hope this helps.

Coverted Video to SWF

I created a short video of animimated pictures to SWF usning a converter program.  I have copied your code into Content Editor Web Part and have uploaded my SWF file with same name you used.  I copied in the code, but nothing plays.  Any ideas.  Thans for your help!

Re: Coverted Video to SWF

Is the page accessible externally where I could look?
Please note that the flash embed code I uploaded was specific to Soapbox. That is why I was hesitant to provide a code view as each hosting provider, YouTube, Soapbox, etc. has different embed code and uses different ids. So you really need the code specific to your video hoster

Flash webpart

Hi,

I have uploaded a newssticker kind of a program using desinger on my sharepoint website. I have flash file, pictures and an xml file in place for it to work. Now, the problem is I need the end user to edit the xml file to add pictures, every week and I dont him to use the designer to edit this XML. I created a doc lib and copied the flash file, the xml file, and pictures. However for some reason, my flash program is reading data from the root xml in the designer but not from the doc lib.I need a way to upload the xml file on my sharepoint, so that end user will update the xml file when needed and will not go into the desinger to do that.

Re: Flash Webpart

Sorry to hear you are having trouble. You cant arbitrarily move the XML file or any other supporting ones without also editing the pointers withing the master file. Otherwise Flash utilities tend to always point to the relative root by default.

flash webpart

Question related to the above reply again,

So, how do I edit the pointers within the master file, so that it will not point to the root by defualt.

Re: flash webpart

When embedding the master file in the web page you should have the parameter exposed to be able to do so. For example if using SharePoint Designer you can look at the code view to change. If those options are not exposed then you need to look at the documentation from the individual application you are using to create the content for directions. Many low end Flash creation apps dont give you the option and you are stuck. In those cases the options arent exposed. Having said that at 4:12 of my video in this post it shows the exposed content that you can edit to change pointers.
If you are still having problems with it zip up the whole project out put files and email to me AND post a request on my Blog Network wall on Facebook http://apps.facebook.com/blognetworks/blogpage.php?aid=744009046&blogid=33250 (that is only place I am taking requests for demos and such now) and I will create a screencast on how to, if it is possible with your application

flash webpart

does anyone know how to add .flv or flash file to sharepoint coming from adobe captivate.  Captivate just puts out a .flv file but i cannot download it to sharepoint.

Thanks for your help in advanced.

Re: flash webpart

Once you save the flv from Captivate then you should be able to simply upload it to a document library. If that fails one of two things is happening. 1-your sharepoint admin has set the blocked file types to include FLV.  2- the file itself larger than the settings for file size limitation. This setting can be changed but by default I believe is 20mb. If it is not larger and you are having a timeout issue try using the the multiple file upload even though for one file as this will avaoid possible browser timeouts.

Thank God for Flash and Flex.  sorry but silverlight is way too behind when it comes to state of the art components.. sad, but true..

Microsoft will catch up one day, I guess when Apple disintegrates, M$ can hire the real artistic talent.. :)
