Video: Michael On The Go – Skillsets For Employability

This is the third video in the Increasing Personal Impact While Maximizing Employability series, the last video series I will be running here on my blog before I switch to my new format, focus, and location. In this video I discuss some steps that people can take to ensure that their skills are current. I use SharePoint skills as a focus but the principles apply to all.

It's Marketability ;-)

Mike - following you on Twitter and saw this post.  Love the video and the commentary....

As someone who is a partner in a training company that focuses on developing people's skills sets and closing the skills gaps that exist in the IT world (specifically Microsoft Professionals) I can't help but say - you nailed it.

I've been telling people for over a decade, being a software developer, business analyst, dba is like being a doctor.  You have to keep learning, keep your skills fresh.

We wouldn't want a cardiologist working on us with a method they learned 10 years ago and companies don't want people working on their systems that don't have the most up to date knowledge on their specific technology.  Developers must constantly be growing and updating their skill set to remain marketable...It's Marketability ;-)

I can confirm your comments on the skills gap that surrounds SharePoint.  We are hearing from our clients constantly - grow SharePoint professionals and we can hire them!  There is a huge demand for this skill set, in addition to .NET, SQL Server, and Microsoft Business Intelligence knowledge....

I look forward to more vlogs regarding this topic - keep it up!

Re: It's Marketability ;-)

Thanks for the affirmation on this. I will try keeping up but will be moving to my new blog. I am actually planning on re-doing this whole video series from scratch on my new blog with a more broad reach (and will have to shrten and crispen the vids as will be on YouTube and subject to 10 minute time limits)
