Video: Michael On The Go – Leveraging Web Based Services To Build Internet Presence Brand And Customer Loyalty

While driving the other day to speak at the new Triangle SharePoint Users in Winston-Salem NC I recorded this 17minute Michael on the Go piece. In it I discuss two areas of focus to help build brand and increase customer loyalty for your Internet facing sites. The first part focuses on leveraging existing Windows Live services within your SharePoint Internet site. The second part then focuses on leveraging interactive out of the box SharePoint features to extend a traditional web presence to further build brand and increase customer loyalty.

After watching the video check out a few sample sites running on Microsoft Office SharePoint Server that are making use of some of the features I discuss. Then ask yourself, “how are we leveraging our SharePoint investment to build our brand?”

*Note-due to the 17 minute length I compressed my video smaller than usual in order to shrink download size from 133mb to 54mb

Example links:

  • National Professional Paintball League (slick SharePoint site leveraging events, news, dashboard pages, image libraries, etc.)
  • Ministry of Sound (another slick MOSS site)
  • Fan U (sports fan site making use of blogs and more for interactivity)
  • AMD Developer Central  (great use of SharePoint blogs and Content by Query roll-up)
  • GetSharp ( Podcasting Kit for SharePoint used on public facing Internet. Use of LiveID for sign in and comments and ratings. Great stuff!)

re brand

does microsoft package up any of the live services you mention for ready use with sharepoint? that would make for much more use. I see a couple of things that would be helpful for this. 1 web parts ready made that call live content and services. 2 some type of tool for combining sevices kinda like the demo you did way back using popfly to make mashups. 3 a couple of sample apps suitable for use in learning and modifying for use. this would be especially good to see if done using azure.
still suprises me that you guys havent done more to leverage microsoft internet content and services within sharepoint.

Re: re brand

Les, I couldn't agree with you more. I will certainly pass along your comments but quite frankly, this is something you will see much more quickly if there were more customers actively asking. Unfortunately, this is one of those cases where it is often, you don't know what you don't know and many customers are unaware of the opportunities for synergy.

SPS Internet Live

Les has great ideas. We have been playing with SharePoint internally and like the collaboration features. It would be a big help if there were things like tools for mashups for SPS and web parts already done. One other thing would be an easier way to skin a SPS site. In small shops like ours we dont have a lot of graphics people but want a good looking web site. There seems to be better options for this with other website tools like DotNetNuke.

Live SharePoint Integration

Having ready made integration with Live services as well as tools like those mentioned here would make Sharepoint an easier sell with my management for the internet.
