Video: Introducing And Explaining Backseat Driving Videos With Mikey

I have been receiving numerous requests lately from customers, colleagues, and readers of this blog to start doing more interviews with subject matter experts in SharePoint, Office, and other Microsoft technologies. The challenge has been though that I am stuck geographically here in the Raleigh area of NC. Well I am happy to announce that I now have a way around that! I do have to admit though that in this case the idea around how to solve that issue is not my own. The credit for that idea goes to Mick Batali. Mick and I were trying to come up with a way in which I could get him to talk on video about the things he and his organization were doing around Podcasting Kit for SharePoint deployment and it was like Emeril says, BAM! Mick said he really liked the Michael on the Go videos and wouldn't it be cool if you could do it sort of as a backseat interview where I start the talk of with an intro and maybe a question and then the person in “the backseat” runs with it. In that way they could do a film clip remotely of their subject and I could just splice that with my own together. Enter a new video series “Backseat Driver.” I have already hit up a few folks I know and have some pretty exciting content lined up but I wanted to open this up.

Many of you are doing some very creative and cool things with SharePoint. Microsofties, partners, clients, do you have best practices, tips and tricks, a solution, cool web part, whatever, that you would like to share? Maybe you have something that is not SharePoint or Office related. That’s cool too (remember the + in this blogs title, Michael Gannotti on SharePoint +). I would love to hear from all kinds of folks around all sorts of Microsoft technology, social computing practices, mobility, eHome entertainment and such. To help give you an idea of how to go about doing so I have created a short video that explains what to do and includes a sample video (no I am not expecting your portion to be like my over the top Big D piece…. you’ll have to watch it to see ;-)

Check out the video and then get the ball rolling. The objective is this should not take any more than 10-20 minutes of your time. Below the video I have also listed a few of the things mentioned in the video to keep in mind. So See you soon in the Backseat!! smile_regular

Backseat Driver Intro Video

Backseat Driver Do’s:

  • Do Post your idea on my Michael Gannotti on SharePoint + Blog Network wall first.
  • Do – Record a clip 10 minutes or less
  • Do – Start off the clip acknowledging hand off from me to you then conclude by handing it back.
  • Do – Record your clip with any means available (video cam, webcam, etc) but record at no less than 640X480 resolution
  • Do – Feel free to include or use screencasts if showing a demo (you can get a free copy of Community Clips here for that)
  • Do – Post your clip up to Windows Live Skydrive. They presently offer 5gb of free storage space with a Live ID and are upping it to 25gb!
  • Do - Include any additional collateral (document, code, links) that you wish to have attached to the posting.
  • Do – Relax and have fun with it. My Michael on the Go vids aren't exactly professional grade. I have no editor, no scripts, and a cheap $100+ video cam for them. Its the content that’s king and what you have to say! If I wanted super polished content I would find some modern day pseudo news reporter to professionally put out some polished spin. I want you though and the real deal.
  • Do –  Get started today and ….. see you in the Backseat!

Brilliant Idea

Michael - I've got to hand it to you on this one... brilliant idea. There is SO much good stuff going on, I hope people will take advantage of your offer to not just show the 'How to' videos, but the really fun, easy stuff they've been able to do with SharePoint. Again, great idea. I'd love to participate.

Regards and peeved that I didn't think of this one.

Another creative idea!

Hey Michael,

Just wanted to say the energy and passion you show in you talks as well as the clever ways you use podcasting are really interesting.

I had never seen someone do a podcast 'while driving' sort of thing, and it was a really interesting idea. I think this new method is even cooler, and I can't wait to see what other clever ways you find to communicate your ideas and knowledge to the community.

Thanks again for all the effort and work you do regularly to help us all understand concepts and ideas more, or inspire us to become more vocal/helpful to the community,
Richard

Re: Brilliant Idea

Thanks Mark :-)
I would love to get you on board with some content :-)
Don't be peeved... take it and run with it yourself. Just be sure to do a clip for me first!

Re: Another creative idea!

Thanks Richard :-)
I think there is so much good stuff and so much creativity out there I would just love to see a lot of people submit clips showing their work and ideas. Plus there is only so much I can blab about myself while driving ;-)
Can I get a clip from you?

Richard Harbridge

I would love to send you a clip about something relating to SharePoint, but I don't even have a webcam. Dun dun dunnn

My full intention is to buy a nice camera with recording capacity though and will certainly submit something when I get one.

It just seems so exciting and an excellent way to communicate ideas to people and much more relaxed/easier to understand than long articles/blog postings.

Anyways, looking forward to helping out and seeing what other neat ideas this inspires,
Richard

P.S - Video Collaboration, I wonder why I haven't heard of someone doing this with just normal audio podcasts?

Re: Richard Harbridge

Hey Richard I look forward to hearing from you with any ideas/clips you come up with. :-)
If you dont have a video camera but can do the audio you could do one of two things. You could send along an audio podcast clip with a still image of yourself in a suitable talking pose r you could use Windows Movie maker to set the audio against a series of screen shots (just need function/PrintScreen and good old MS Paint to grab those) to create a narrated tech talk. Just a thought.
