Getting Wireless To Work On A Laptop Running Windows Server 2008 As Its Operating System

Phaz had a great question about enabling wireless with a laptop running Windows Server 2008 as its primary operating system. Knowing that many of you are also running virtual machine images as a part of work I thought I would re-post my answer here as the answer was not easy for me to find when I struggled through it.

Question: “I've been running a similar setup, Server 2008 on an Inspiron 1501. What did you do to get wireless working?”

Answer: “Ahh that one was a pain. Turns out even with the drivers the services is disabled since it is a server by default. In server manager go to Add Features and select Wireless LAN Service. Once I did that it all worked.”

Where was this a month ago!

Thanks for this tidbit.  I tried to load 2008 as my laptop's main OS - running a Dell M65, I figured I had the horse power - but couldn't make it work.

To flesh out the symptoms - you have the driver's loaded, your system recognizes and displays the wireless card - but when you try to enable the card, it flips back to disabled.

I ended up rolling back to XP - but now realize that this was my issue.  Thanks for posting

I have heard this from a few folks ;-)
It really is a buried feature. Well if you retry now you'll know.

Dude!!!

So I installed Windows Server 2008 on my T61 and was rather bummed that I couldn't get wireless working even though everything else was flying.  Now I know what I'm doing tomorrow :)
