Video: A Look At Microsoft Surface And Its Uses

While out in Seattle for TechReady 8 one of the event features that captivated many attendees was the use of Microsoft Surface. There were a number of these stations set up where users could interact with the systems, play games on it, or even access a custom built application that delivered sales and marketing materials to help arm attendees in sales efforts. It was pretty cool stuff and in this video we catch up with a few attendees who show and discuss the system and their experiences with it as well as plans for harnessing its power in various scenarios. If you are a client with a retail presence, a group putting on an event, a company wanting to provide an interactive customer experience, then watch this video, and start thinking about how you could leverage the power of this device. Talking to attendees I couldn't help but think about scenarios wherein a number of my own client could utilize such devices in their public facing locations, and surface custom applications tied to central SharePoint data/content/multimedia to deliver an interactive experience that differentiates them from their competition. In the meantime I will continue to dream about getting one of these for my family room. smile_shades

Virtualization Case Study And Free Download Book

In today's economy server consolidation and the use of virtualization are becoming more and more prevalent. Well today I wanted to share a brand spankin’ new case study featuring a great local client, Ingersoll Rand. The following is a quote from the case study: “I was impressed with the performance of Hyper-V, compared to our ESX servers. I deployed it in beta format into our production environment in 37 different countries. That’s how impressed I was with the product,” says Graffeo. “On each of those machines, I stood up three applications: DC, WSUS, and also System Center Configuration Manager. Thanks to Hyper-V, I deployed 120 virtual machines in 30 days.

You can read the whole case study, Global Manufacturing Company Boosts Agility with Server to Desktop Virtualization, by clicking here.

After reading the case study you might want to then check out this new freely downloadable book on virtualization, Understanding Microsoft Virtualization Solutions. “This guide will teach you about the benefits of the latest virtualization technologies and how to plan, implement, and manage virtual infrastructure solutions. The technologies covered include: Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V, System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2009, Microsoft Application Virtualization 4.5, Microsoft Enterprise Desktop Virtualization, and Microsoft Virtual Desktop Infrastructure.”

Migrating My Production Machine To Windows 7 And Windows Server 2008 R2 Plus Win 7 Video

So this morning I have started to back up all my laptop data in preparation for the BIG MOVE. No, I am not moving from North Carolina but I am migrating my main production laptop from Windows Vista to a dual boot boot configuration of Windows 7 beta and Windows Server R2 beta. Now I am not advocating everyone go out and do this. I am actually doing this partly for work reasons (I need to run Hyper-V for my new SharePoint demo images and figure what the heck if going to server why not latest/greatest) and partly because that is one of the cool things about my role. In my role as a Technology Specialist I get to be one of those guys who is a nightmare for operations. My PCs are completely unmanaged except for some baseline requirements around security features like anti-virus and such. Other than that I can run pretty much any operating system I want and any applications I want. Soooo I am taking the path to the future a little early. Should be an interesting adventure. For those wondering about my config. here is some text from a conversation I just had with one of my Facebook friends (are you on Facebook yet and one of my friends? If not why? Its where you’ll find me engaging in interactive discussions as opposed to just posting…. but I digress) and I am pasting it below.

“Facebook Friend at 7:41pm January 16
Mike, what is the size of your Windows 7 partition?

Michael Gannotti at 8:03am January 17
My test machine has a single 80 gb drive and I split the partitions evenly. Now for my production machine which I am doing this weekend I have two 120gb drives internally. On the primary drive I am going to install Server 08 then resize it down to 40gb. Then I will give the remaining amount on the primary drive to my Windows 7 install. The secondary drive is for data and virtual images for the Server 08 HyperV”

I have also been seeing a number of my Twitter friends posting about their own switching as well as about how much they are enjoying it I just got a link to a great video from some folks in the UK on a video they posted on their initial Windows 7 experience. Text from my Twitter feed below.

“yellowpark @gannotti hi michael, uploaded one on windows 7 yesterday with @ActionLamb http://bit.ly/fYNH 3 minutes ago from web in reply to gannotti”  (the actual url for the video is http://www.yellowpark.net/cdalby/index.php/2009/01/17/windows-7-preview/ )

Well time to get moving with my backups so I can move forward on my project. Once I am done I will be sure to post a video on it here.

For the brave of heart here are some links of interest:

Trying Windows 7 Out? Win7 Must Read Resources

I have been getting pinged by quite a few folk in the last few days who are flattening their machines and jumping on the Windows 7 bandwagon. I have already made the jump myself on a test machine here (set it up as a dual boot box with Windows 7 beta being the primary operating system and Windows Server 2008 R2 beta being the secondary where I can utilize Hyper-V). Please keep in mind that while it is fast and slick, it is still beta. I may doing doing a similar wipe and install on my own production machine this weekend but I am a Microsoft employee eating our own dog-food so to speak. Beta is meant for testing not running your production hardware and is not the same as release code. You will encounter occasional quirks/bugs that are being addressed, incomplete features, and such.

Having said all the pre-requisite warnings so far I LOVE it on my test box. If you do decide to test Windows 7 then there are a couple of great postings over at Microsoft’s Channel 10 that will help you great some Windows 7 essentials.

Finally be sure to check out the Windows 7 blog site. They will provide frequent information updates that will help to enhance and secure your experience with Windows 7.

Microsoft Assessment and Planning Toolkit 3.2 Now Available!!

Wow, a whole slew of releases today based on the Microsoft Assessment and Planning Toolkit 3.2. Big thanks to Baldwin Ng for getting this information out to us field folks to pass along. This really is a biggie for the operational folks side of things and I am very happy to pass along the information.

Microsoft Assessment and Planning Toolkit 3.2 Now Available

New Features to include Microsoft Online Services, SQL Server 2008, Forefront Client Security, and Network Access Protection

http://www.microsoft.com/MAP

Many of you are in the midst of an IT migration or upgrade planning but do not know 100% with certainty what computers are in their IT environment or what applications have been deployed. The Microsoft Assessment and Planning (MAP) Toolkit 3.2 makes it easier for customers and partners like you to quickly identify what servers, workstations, and network devices are in your IT environment. MAP also provides specific and actionable IT proposals and reports to help you get the most value out of Microsoft products and infrastructure. Over 510,000 Microsoft customers and partners have already downloaded and used MAP and its prior versions including Costco Wholesale Corporation, Continental Airlines, and Banque de Luxembourg.

Introducing Microsoft Assessment and Planning Toolkit

MAP is a scalable and agent-less assessment platform designed to make it easier for you to adopt the latest Microsoft technologies. In this version, MAP has expanded its assessment capabilities to include SQL Server 2008, Forefront/NAP, and Microsoft Online Services migration, as well as providing a Power Savings assessment to help you “go green.”

In summary, MAP 3.2 assessment areas now include:

SQL Server Database Instance Discovery (NEW!)

Microsoft Online Services Needs Assessment and Survey (NEW!)

Forefront Client Security/NAP Readiness Assessment (NEW!)

Power Savings Calculator (NEW!)

Virtualization Infrastructure Assessment (e.g. reporting the mapping of hosts by guests) (NEW!)

• Windows Server 2008 Hardware Assessment

• Server Consolidation Reports and Proposals (Hyper-V or Virtual Server 2005 R2)

• Windows Vista and Microsoft Office 2007 Hardware Assessment

• Desktop Security Assessment to determine if desktops have anti-virus and anti-malware programs installed and up-to-date, or if the Windows Firewall is turned on

Toolkit Features

The Microsoft Assessment and Planning Toolkit performs key functions that include hardware and device inventory, compatibility analysis, and readiness reporting.

MAP utilizes an enterprise-scale, agent-less architecture that enables you to inventory your servers, desktops, applications, and network devices without installing any software agents on each machine being assessed. This tool can discover all computers within Active Directory, and most importantly, non-IT managed machines such as workgroup members.

Additionally, MAP can generate localized desktop readiness reports in seven languages including North American English, German, French, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, and Portuguese.

Benefits to You (Customers and Partners)

Fast and Agent-less. MAP provides secure network-wide assessment of environments of up to 100,000 computers in a matter of hours instead of days, all without deploying any software agents on each inventoried machine.

Saves Pre-Sales and Planning Time. For most IT consultants and Microsoft Partners, a detailed network inventory and assessment of servers and desktops often takes days of manual labor. With MAP, they can now drastically reduce the time it takes for the same inventory to a matter of hours; allowing them more time to focus their efforts on critical pre-sales engagement tasks. For IT professionals, MAP can significantly reduce the time it takes to gather the information necessary to make the business case for client and server migration, as well as for their upcoming virtualization projects.

Actionable Recommendations and Reporting. MAP offers valuable inventory and readiness assessment reports with specific upgrade recommendations and virtualization candidate reports that make it easier for IT migration and deployment projects to get off the ground and running.

Coverage from Desktops to Servers. MAP provides technology assessment and planning recommendations for many Microsoft desktop and server products including SQL Server 2008, Forefront Client Security/NAP, Microsoft Online Services, Windows Server 2008, Hyper-V, Virtual Server 2005 R2, Windows Vista, 2007 Microsoft Office, Microsoft Application Virtualization (or App-V), System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2007, and more.

Why build MAP Toolkit for SQL Server 2008?

Since the SQL Server 2000 mainstream support has already expired a few months ago, our research told us that many of our customers want to quickly migrate their legacy database servers to SQL Server 2008. However, locating and discovering SQL instances remained a labor-intensive task or a “chore.”

The MAP Toolkit 3.2 solves the problem by creating new collection mechanism to find these hard-to-find SQL Server 2000 and 2005 database instances. In just a hour or so, you will now be able to discover and report on these instances by version and edition, making it easier for you to collectively understand your install base of database servers.

What can you get from MAP Toolkit 3.2 for SQL Server 2008?

With MAP Toolkit 3.2, you can now get an auto-generated set of report and proposal in just an hour or so. The SQL Server assessment proposal offers a high-level look at the assessment of SQL Server instances while the Microsoft Excel spreadsheet offers an in-depth machine-by-machine (or instance-by-instance) view.
