Check Out Joel Oleson’s Ten Cool Branded SharePoint Global Internet Sites You Can RAVE About!

Okay earlier I quick pointed everyone to the Ferrari posting that shows my favorite cars in the world being powered by SharePoint (see site and video Check Out The New Ferrari.com Site! – Powered By SharePoint ). Joel Oleson though has kicked it up a notch with a listing of 10 gorgeous SharePoint driven public Internet sites in his new post Ten Cool Branded SharePoint Global Internet Sites You Can RAVE About!

If you have any doubts about SharePoint’s ability to deliver compelling Internet sites then after checking out Joel's post head on over to to WSSdemo.com run by Ian Morrish. There he has a section of Public facing SharePoint Internet sites that you can peruse and then visit.  They are broken down by industry.

SharePoint kicks some serious booty in the web content management world! If you have SharePoint then are you lowering operational/development costs by consolidating on SharePoint across the board? You should be!

Update!: Jeremy Thake has a couple of very good videos posted showing the creation of a custom SharePoint site, Western Australia Tourism, that you should also check out. See:

Check Out The New Ferrari.com Site! – Powered By SharePoint

In case you missed it yesterday buried in one of my must read links a site near and dear to my heart is now running on MOSS 2007. Ferrari is a double shot winner for me personally. Beautiful muscle cars and Italy! smile_wink

The closest I may ever get to driving one of their beautiful machines is in my dreams but now I have a gorgeous website to go to where I can pick up more cars for my dreams. SharePoint guru and all around great guy Muhanad Omar has a post on his site that contains a link to a video that highlights this new SharePoint under the hood site.

For those who have been pinging me about when I am going to move my blog…. it’s soon. I had hoped to be running Monday but am still back and forth about where to host. I prefer to have it stay SharePoint based but my personal budget seems to be limiting me more to WordPress based solutions which will in turn really limit what I can do with the site. If anyone has any suggestions I am wide open. I did get one about going in with others but I want this new one to be a top level www.mikegannotti.com site.

Gotta run. Have work due this morning then on the road this afternoon to a clients. Have a great day!

New Video, Gannotti Household Milestone, Monday Morning SharePoint And More Reads

Good morning all,

In the process of uploading a new video in the Increasing Personal Impact While Maximizing Employability series. This one focuses on getting online. I am also still researching new blog options. After looking at the various platforms, level of work, etc. to put put out the kind of blog I want to do I am back to square one. While WordPress and others have fine platforms and ultimately may be where I end up I would really prefer to move to another SharePoint instance as I want to readily wrap in dashboarding, InfoPath forms, wikis, and more. Given my tight budget I may still end up on Wordpress but I am going to take a few more days this week to see if I can find SharePoint hosting that I can afford.

In the meantime the IT world and personal world goes on. This weekend marked a momentous occasion in the Gannotti household. My son Sam turned 18! I can still remember the cute baby boy I held in my arms for the first time and now wonder where all those years have gone. Next year he heads off to college, and does so truly as a much finer young man than I ever was at his age. I was really excited to be able to give him a present I had been holding on to for the past 18 years and gratified that he got such a rush out of it. His first year on this planet I went around buying news/sports magazines, comic books, baseball trading cards, and many more items and put them in a large plastic sealable Rubbermaid box. The box was then sealed and re-opened for the first time Saturday. The look on his face ad excitement was priceless. Highly encourage anyone with youngsters/newborns to think of creating a mini time capsule for your own children that you can give them when they become an adult.

Well on the IT front there have been quite a few happenings to pass along so here are some Monday morning must reads for you.

Webcast Recording: Performance Management with SharePoint PerformancePoint Services

We had a great turnout for what may be the last of my SharePoint Weekly Webcasts as a part of this blog. In case you missed it or want to share what was presented the recordings of the session are now online and can be accessed via the information below. I do want to thank all of you who have been regularly attending these sessions and I hope that you found them beneficial. While I will no longer be doing a regular LiveMeeting series like this as a part of my new blog (it is not going to be MSFT hosted or affiliated so I cannot use my LiveMeeting account to facilitate ongoing sessions) I am open to doing additional webcasts around SharePoint as well as other SocialMedia content if partners, vendors, etc. have their own LiveMeeting, WebEx, etc accounts and want to guest appear. Also, if anyone has any ideas around a similar solution that will not cost anything I am wide open to any ideas you may have. I would love to continue to bring content and coverage that provides and opportunity for Q&A in my new setting but will have to be a whole new platform/approach.

Big Big Changes Happening With My Blog! Exciting Move Next Week

As many of you have already heard based on the flood of Facebook messages and email I have received I will be moving to new blog digs shortly. I am looking to expand the format of my blog coverage to all things social computing wise. With so many tools, services, evolving practices, gadgets, and more I wanted to be able to really start delivering on the full smorgasbord of all things social. With that in mind I figured the best thing would be to start fresh with a site that runs on my dime on my time. I will have the new URL  posted here and with more of my readers connecting with me via Twitter as well as to a lesser extent, Facebook, i will be sure to post the new site there as well. I will be finishing out the existing video series on Increasing Your Personal Impact While Maximizing Employability here and I will be leaving the site intact for as long as Microsoft sees fit to leave the site up and contents available. I am going to miss blogging with SharePoint as it really has been a joy being able to leverage all of flexibility and power in so many ways. The new site will be hosted by Wordpress and while it is a fine platform is, as I expected, much less flexible in what I can do and deliver. The move though I think will be for the best in the long term and I will still be able to deliver popular features I have had here such as Michael on the Go and BackSeat Driving with Michael. They will just be done 100% on my own time as they will know longer be solely focused on SharePoint or Microsoft products and services for that matter. So with that these are the changes and continuity you can expect to see:

  • SharePoint – Let me be perfectly clear. I love SharePoint! I will continue to deliver messaging and information around it. It is the most pervasive Enterprise social computing product out there and my clients will expect that I continue to deliver information around it, and I will. It will just no longer be my sole focus on blogging and since this will be a sight completely separated from my day job you can expect to see a much wider range of coverage to include all sort of technology. Heck I live here in the Research Triangle Park in North Carolina home to IBM Research, Cisco, Red Hat, a huge Google center, just to name a few. It’s a big world out there and aim to bring more if it to you.
  • SharePoint Weekly Webcast – I will be finishing out this series over the next few weeks and probably wrap it up for good around June. IN the meantime there are some great upcoming sessions like today’s session on Performance Management with PerformancePoint. I am going to look in to a replacement webcast series as well as a new delivery method. I love using LiveMeeting but since this will be done on my own need to find a no cost method of doing a similar format. Ideas are welcome here.
  • Michael on the Go – This series will absolutely continue. The only difference will be I will no longer be recording these sessions during work travel time. They will be done off hours and now you may here me talking about a much wider range of social computing topics and technologies.
  • BackSeat Driving with Michael – These videos have gotten a great response from viewers and will absolutely continue them. Hopefully I will continue to get good episodes from the SharePoint community but with me expanding to many other areas I anticipate being able to deliver more of these as I will have a larger well to draw from.
  • Mikeys Tech Talk – I just started this new audio series but I haven't been able to find suitable free Internet audio hosting so I am afraid that this will have to go by the wayside. If at some point I do find a way around the hosting issue then I will revisit it.
  • Daily Reads – I do these before work, up at 5am every day anyway so I will continue. Again though, they will be expanded in coverage beyond just SharePoint, Microsoft Office, and some additional Microsoft products.

In short you can continue to expect much of the same just via a new permanent URL and with a much broader focus. I hope those of you who have been steady readers here will follow me over on my new online journey. I can promise you this with it…. it is only going to get better. :-)

Great Post On SharePoint Commerce Services for Commerce Server 2009

Getting ready for a meeting but just had to pass this quickly along. If you are looking to use SharePoint as the front end for your public Internet presence but have rich commerce/catalog needs then you should take a look at this article. If helps to lay out the integration between Commerce Server 2009 and SharePoint.

Video Series Today, Geocasting, And Monday SharePoint And More Reads

Getting ready to hit the road to Charlotte for the day for an Architectural Design Session at a client site. I have a few Michael on the Go videos to record based on a late of the questions I have been getting as of late. The videos will be techie focused and follow a common theme of Increasing Your Personal Impact While Maximizing Your Employability. I have jotted down a sketch of the topics I will be discussing and they break down like this:

  • Increasing Personal Impact and Building Your Brand
  • Skill-sets for Survival
  • Get Online! Leveraging Blogs, Twitter, and Facebook
  • Maximum Blogging
  • Maximum Facebook
  • Maximum Twitter

Admittedly I am definitely not the worlds foremost expert in any of this but with all the questions I have been getting related to these areas I thought I would try and bring together all the scattered bits and pieces I have been replying with in to a single cohesive form. Hopefully some of you will find it helpful and beside what better way for me to spend my drive to and from Charlotte.

I will be doing some geocasting today using IncaX LiveMedia GPS. I had wanted to do some this weekend but the Mrs put the nix on it. In order for me to do it with my present setup I need to set up my phone (i760), set up an external Bluetooth GPS, connect the two, then get the program going and she doesn’t like all the set up. Hope springs eternal and I am still hoping by hook or by crook I will be able to secure a decent social media ready phone by summer (and no I don’t mean an iPhone. No video recording means not a true social media ready device). In the meantime though since it is just me today in my car I will be hooking it up. Still no audio and wont be until I get a phone that can handle that part but it is still pretty cool. You can check out my geocasting page here on this blog.

In the meantime as I get ready to hit the road there are quite a few nuggets out there to keep you busy and provide some reading and viewing pleasure this morning and with your lunch.
