Terry's site focuses towards Microsoft partners working with Microsoft Information Worker products and solutions across the Heartland Area (MI, OH, KY, TN). There will be a heavy focus towards partner enablement here, so check back often for the latest updates. I'll be sharing lots of information through this portal over the course of time. Some of this will be in the form of written blogs, others will be in the form of podcasts, and I'll try to make sure that I keep the content concise, relevant, and fun. Please provide comments if you think of ways that I could improved the site for your use. Thanks for visiting!

Hmmmm...the best job at Microsoft? Interesting question because there are just so many of them. One of the things that I most enjoy about working at Microsoft centers around impact.
Remember when you were growing up and people would ask what you want to be when you grow up? Many of us would reply with answers that amounted to vocations that put us in a position to help other people, or maybe even save the world. In my mind, there's nothing better for me than being in a position at a company that allows me to make a difference in people's lives; to do something that has visible impact into the way others live.
Microsoft provides so many of these types of opportunities; the chance to make a difference in someone's life...the opportunity to change the world!
I'm lucky enough to be in such a position. About 2 weeks ago, I moved into a new role on my existing team that will allow me to work with a technology that is relatively new for Microsoft, rapidly changing in the industry, and will change people's lives.
It's the world of unified communications, or UC, as some people call it. I get the opportunity to work with Microsoft partners, not just in Heartland Area as in the past, but across the entire 18-state Central Region.
I'm going to help our partners learn how to sell and deliver our UC solutions, so that we have the ability take this new technology to every customer. Yes, it will change lives for those who embrace it.
You've probably seen the demonstrations by now where we allow people to easily communicate with others through either instant message, video or audio call, or generating multiple party conferences all at the click of a couple buttons. It's very cool stuff!
So, you're wondering how it plays out as a business benefit? Imagine if you could reduce your travel time to other offices for meetings because you can now video conference using a simple webcam, microphone, and an Internet connection. If you've checked the price of airfare lately, you'll know that it wouldn't take long at all to pay for the solution.
How about easier communications? Most people have multiple phones, multiple e-mail address, and so on. I have one Voice-over-IP (VoIP) phone number that people can reach me on because when that number rings, it simultaneously rings my work phone and my mobile phone. I answer whichever is more convenient. If I don't answer, the call goes to voice mail, which then lands in my E-mail inbox and I can listen to the voice mail later or forward it to another colleague to listen to.
Do you spend time on your laptop at home sitting on the coach so that you can be in the same room as your family...and you count it as "quality time"? Maybe that happens because you're behind on e-mail from being on the road all day, or in meetings. I take advantage of speech enabled messaging by calling my e-mail server and having it read my e-mail to me over the phone while I'm commuting to and from the office. I can reply, forward, or delete the message using voice commands and never take my hands or eyes off the task of driving.
It's going to be fun...and yes, I have the best job at Microsoft. 8/11/2008
Time to get back at it! It's been a quick summer, to be sure, but the kids are back to thinking about school for the fall, my oldest heads off to college this week, and it seems like a great time get re-focused, re-energized and hit the ground running.
My apologies for the lack of blog postings lately. The summer has been a little crazy from a personal perspective, as well as from a job perspective.
I hope you've had a great summer and I have a lot of information to share with all of you....a new role in the company, a new geography to cover, and so much more... 6/12/2008
The Microsoft® Office Visio® 2007 Professional Add-In makes it easy for Exchange Administrators to visualize, explore, and communicate complex information. Instead of viewing single user data at a time, administrators can create data-connected Visio diagrams that display data at a glance and dramatically increase productivity. You can use it to diagram a Microsoft® Exchange Server 2007 site topology, including sites, servers, and connections for an organization.

Windows Search just got better. Windows Search 4.0 is now available for download. With it you can expect better indexing performance, support for the remote query of shared index locations, per-user group policy settings, and more. I've been using it now for about a week or so and my desktop searches are noticeably faster because of the better indexing. To try it out, select from the following operating environments:

The beta version for Microsoft Producer for Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007 is now available via the Microsoft Connect Directory in the Office category. Producer is a free add-in that enables PowerPoint 2007 users to capture, synchronize, and publish audio, video, slides, and images to create engaging rich media presentations that can be viewed in a Web browser. The beta will run until June 30; after that we will review feedback and launch the final version to the Office Download Center in July or August. Apply now with your Windows Live ID for immediate access to the Producer 2007 installer download, FAQs, and help resources. 6/5/2008
Given that Windows Vista deployment is a key initiative for us at Microsoft over the next 12 months (or more), I thought it would be worthwhile to spend a few minutes sharing some facts about where we are with some of the perceived issues that customers regularly share with us concerning their interest, or lack thereof, with deploying Windows Vista in their own environments.
Certainly, we are beginning to see more and more companies in the process of deploying Windows Vista now than we have had previously. Some of these companies are beginning the planning of how to do it, some are testing it in their labs, and others are a little further down the road and getting ready to deploy.
SP1 recently shipped and provided has several improved features. We've had a lot of hardware and ISV partners working to get their products working in the Windows Vista world, and now is a great time to think about getting it deployed in your customer environments.
But I promised facts, so here you go. These were taken from a recent TechNet Flash Newsletter article.
- Windows Vista now supports more than 77,000 printers, cameras, speakers and other devices.
- More than 2,700 software programs are “Certified for” or “Works with” Windows Vista-logoed; 97 of the top 100 consumer applications are compatible.
- 62% of small businesses said Windows Vista saves them time, and 70% said it makes them more productive, according to an independent survey.
- More than 140 million copies of Windows Vista have been sold, making it the fastest selling operating system in Microsoft history. Even Macs run it.
- 71 percent of Windows Vista customers like it better than their last operating system.
- People familiar with Windows Vista are two to three times more likely to have a favorable impression of it.
- Every 10 PCs that switch to Windows Vista is the equivalent of taking an automobile off the road, in terms of greenhouse gases.
If you’re still on the fence with regard to deploying Windows Vista, read Technical Fellow Mark Russinovich’s Springboard article where he discusses why now may be a good time to take another look at Windows Vista. Also see Mark and a panel of experts discuss adopting Windows Vista into a desktop infrastructure. The panel features subject-matter experts and IT pros from around the world that have tackled Windows Vista deployment. 6/2/2008
Apologies for the gap since my last blog post. I was out on vacation last week taking care of my daughter's graduation from high school. One down...three to go!
Anyway, I stumbled across a great tool today that I thought I would bring to your attention in case you aren't aware.
We now have a tool that helps map the new generation certification exams to the various certifications, and competencies and specializations within the MSPP program. It's an Excel spreadsheet that has multiple tabs for viewing the data by exam, by certification, by legacy certification, and by competency.
Included are links for learning plans, requirements for certifications, and so on. It's a great one-stop shop tool for answering your questions around the technical requirements for certification.
Here's your link to download the tool. 5/23/2008
Last July, we implemented a new MSPP Specialization within the Information Worker Competency for Enterprise Search. You've also heard from many of the Microsoft folks in the past year that Enterprise Search is a key focus for us to get our partners up to speed. So far, we've had very few partners who have actually obtained the Enterprise Search specialization.
Given that piece of information, I thought it interesting when I stumbled across this Technet page that showcases 14 training videos specifically focused on Enterprise Search. Need to get up to speed? Take some time to look over these videos and you'll be walking the walk and talking the talk on enterprise search.

Last Wednesday, I had the honor of presenting to the partners in South Central about our Unified Communications solutions. I'm super excited about the direction that we're headed with our Unified Communications solution, and I've spent the better part of the last 12 months working with many of the partners in the Heartland Area to help them get OCS deployed in their environment so they can better understand the value of the solution.
I have a very strong belief that it's much easier to articulate the value of a solution if you work with it regularly. When you understand how it benefits you, your story to the customer is much more credible.
If you're interested in learning more about Microsoft's UC solution, the webcast is available on-demand here.
