Support end-user productivity with the Productivity Hub

If you’re looking to reduce training and support costs or drive end-user technology adoption in your organization, you might be interested in checking out the Productivity Hub.

Photo of home page of the Productivity Hub

The Productivity Hub is a downloadable SharePoint Server 2007 site collection that is pre-populated with over 300 pieces of content about Office programs (including SharePoint Server!). The content includes videos, documents, and PowerPoint slides. It’s a great solution for organizations that block Internet access—including access to Office Online — but want to support end-user technology needs.

In addition to offering end-user productivity resources, the Hub features training for "coaches," or power users internal to each customer. Coaches reduce the burden on training and helpdesk staff by adding another level of support.

Microsoft will provide quarterly content updates beginning August 2009. Future content additions for Windows 7 are planned. The Productivity Hub will eventually be upgraded to SharePoint Server 2010 and Microsoft will have a migration path for customers currently using the SharePoint Server 2007 Hub.

An online demo of the Productivity Hub is available, and you can download it directly from the Microsoft Download Center.

How will quarterly updates be communicated and published? From Microsoft Downloads?

Answer my own question - how to install update content files

OK, I see, just unzip the files and upload to the content lib... they are already tagged.

Error during install

Let me start by saying that if Microsoft really thinks SharePoint is the future, they better change the convoluted administration procedures. It sucks to be blunt. Anyway, on to the error I am getting trying to install the Productivity Hub. Right after the Timers section of the script, I get the following error. The job failed with the following error. This job will be skipped. The path specified cannot be used at this time. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80070094) Can anyone offer any insight? Also, what good is an online demo when you are prompted for a username and password and none is provided with the link to the demo. Not a good start to my use of this thing.

More info for Bill C

Hi Bill,

I sent your comment to the Productivity Hub team for more help. They suggested that you send them mail at thehub@microsoft.com.

They also suggested that I update the link, which I'll do immediately.

Please let us know how we can help.

Additional Content

I followed the directions for adding content from the IT/Manager "How to add content" topic but I can't get to the files except through viewing all Site Content.  Shouldn't there be an "Access" option on the left menu bar?  What about when I add the Windows 7 content?

Example:  I unzipped the Access folder from the ..Aug_09_Content_Revised zip file into a folder on my local drive and then did the bulk upload.  (This is a new install so I don't have any content ratings.)

There has got to be a better way of doing this then having to manually unzip each folder and upload each document in your additional content files.

If there is, where are the directions?

Additional Content - Use Customization Guide

In the original Productivity Hub Download, there is a document named "Microsoft Productivity Hub Customization Guide.docx".

This document answers the question on how to add content, modify the navigation, etc.  Still seems like a lot of work to add a landing page (Access) that should have been in the original file and just marked "hidden".

I'm still having problems getting the roadmap to work.  I use the email though.
