Request for access exists since Sharepoint 2007

Ehr, maybe you forgot that the "Request Access" functionality exists since Sharepoint 2007.
The user who cannot access a file or an area is prompted with the "Request Access" link, which opens a page with a TextBox.
The user can then add some text and the designated email address will receive an email with the user comment and his user account.

Re: Request for access exists since Sharepoint 2007

Yes, "request access" has been around since 2007, but it's been improved greatly in this release. Now, you get status of your request when you visit the access denied page.. You can even have a back and forth conversation with admin on the access denied page. In the interest of brevity, we didn't cover all that in this blog post.. Definitely give it a shot and let us know how you like it!

Has security changed

In Previous versions of sharepoint we were told not to have too many unique permission assignements. We were encouraged not to grant access to individual documents because doing so could create too many unique permision sets. No2 it seems we're encouraging users to break iinheritance and create unique permission assignments by giving them the ability to 'Share' Documents themselves.

Has something changed in the undelying security model  so that having many unique  permissions iis no longer an issue?

Is there a notifications beacon (or red dot like facebook)?

If someone "shares" a doc, blog post, status update, site, etc...how do I know about it

...will it appear in my "activity stream"...yikes it's called a newsfeed (to me it's more than news, like we have on facebook...this is about doing work, which is why I like the term activitystream..."activities" sounds more work-like, than reading news)

If it does appear in my activity stream, which stream is it...I doubt it's the @mentions stream, is there an inbox stream

Hmmm...I understand the @mentions stream...but what about if I get comments on my posts, or someone comments on posts I have commented on...where am I notified about this

Is there a notifications beacon (or red dot like facebook)?

Access logging /Audits

For sharing content, is there any way to log or audit who accesses content and when?  Office365 will let you track who changes content, but, unlike internal Sharepoint - Office365 does not allow you to track when a user accesses or downloads a document - which is a big problem for us.  We need detailed auditability.

Re: Is there a notifications beacon (or red dot like facebook)?

Currently, there's no newsfeed notification generated when a doc is shared with you. You get notified by an email.

Re: Access logging /Audits

There is no additional logging for documents which are shared in O365. It's same as before.

Which permission level is required to use the "Share" functionality?

I suppose "Sharing" an individual document means breaking permission inheritance and assigning individual access rights for that document.

If things haven't changed drastically, managing permissions is something a normal team member (=Contribute permission) cannot do. I do sincerely hope this hasn't changed, because it would be a sure path to anarchy and to unmanageable site permissions.

So, questions is: can only Site Owners (and SiteCollection Admins) use the "Share" functionality?
